When I was a child, one of my favorite places in the world was my grandparents’ hundred-acre farm.
My sister and I spent countless summer days exploring, but there was one destination that always seemed to call our names.
An old mulberry tree.
It was not much to look at. To us, it was treasure.
We would climb into its branches and spend hours eating handfuls of mulberries until our fingers were completely stained. Eventually, we would climb down carrying the berries we didn't eat and deliver them to Grandmother.
She knew exactly what to do.
Before long, the kitchen smelled like warm cinnamon, bubbling fruit, and fresh mulberry cobbler. Looking back, It was probably one of the best times of our lives.

That delicacy may be one reason fresh mulberries are rarely sold in supermarkets. They bruise easily, spoil quickly, and do not travel nearly as well as firmer berries.
What they lack in commercial convenience, they make up for in nutritional value.

Human studies using standardized mulberry leaf extracts have reported reductions in post-meal glucose responses, although results depend on the preparation, DNJ content, dosage, meal composition, and the health of the participants.5

White mulberry leaf is generally well tolerated when consumed as a food or tea, but concentrated supplements deserve more caution.
Because mulberry leaf may reduce post-meal blood sugar, it may have an additive effect when combined with insulin or blood-sugar-lowering medications. Symptoms of low blood sugar can include shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, weakness, headache, irritability, or rapid heartbeat.
Anyone taking medication for diabetes should speak with a healthcare provider before using concentrated mulberry leaf and should monitor blood glucose carefully.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid concentrated mulberry supplements unless their healthcare provider has specifically approved their use. Safety information in these populations is limited.
More is not always better. The most appropriate amount depends on the preparation, concentration, individual health history, diet, and medications.
